Happy Birthday to Kate!

We went to Lock 7 on sunday with Kate's cousin Jackie. We saw "Wendy Anne" from Michigan headed west. It is a retired/restored tugboat used for pleasure. Boat traffic has been very slow this summer.

Rehearsal dinner will follow the rehersal at 6PM. It will include pizza and wings at the lodge provided by Screamin' Eagle (following Peter and Donnie's taste test). That way if anyone is coming in later they can stop in and heat up leftovers.

Huge ALMS news this weekend and probably more at Petit. Corsa running a Zytek LMP1 hybrid starting at Petit and continuing in 2009 in ALMS. Acura running 2 LMP1 cars with deFerran and Highcroft. Fernandez continues in LMP2 and Andretti goes back whining to the IRL.

I would have to guess that the #37 Intersport car will be a scratch at Detroit. I noticed the Black Swan GT didn't make the Mosport race. Too many hits I figure. Petite looks like it will have a very good car count.

After a solid start with good, low-budget players, the A's began trading anyone that displayed any sort of promise for even younger, lower-budget "prospects". The A's were playing 0.600 baseball and were consistently 1-2 games behind the Angels. After the calculated trades by the management, they are now at 0.462 and 20 games out.

I guess, if you are an owner of a team that you want to move into a new stadium in a different city, the last thing you want is people to start showing up to games to see good baseball.

Today we tie dyed stuff. Then we played mini-golf.

Jake’s Corner by Jeff Santos

I had the opportunity to see Jake’s Corner at the opening of the Sacramento Film and Music Festival. I saw Jeff Santos and Richard Tyson (although he had short hair when we saw him and didn’t look quite as hefty as he appeared in the film). I guess seeing them isn’t a big deal since I’m not even the first person in the family to see them.

The acting was fine, the story and writing was a little (or not just a little) predictable and slow (not quiet as slow as The Station Agent, but also not quiet as good). The development of the story was particularly bad, but improved as it went. The characters were fun, but the story line didn’t take advantage of the subtelties (or potential subtelties) of the characters. The highlight of the movie (if you get beyond the story) is the series of character sketches of people living in Jake’s Corner. It would have been nice to dump more of the storyline and focus more on this strength. My favorite was the Bosnian bartender as Spencer (the boy) is teaching him to play Uno.

In all, it came somewhat close to representing Jake’s Corner (even though that wasn’t the intention): there was heavy drinking of bad beer, strange characters with strange habits, and pretty scenery. However, the cast was generally much younger than the actual residents and there was a lot more of them. Although, it was nice that they didn’t choose unrealistically good looking actors for this film. The down fall for the marketing success that I see is that it is a sentimental (read: sappy) story that features an overwhelmingly male-dominated cast. I’m kind of surprised it got a PG rating given the strong language and the ubiquitous drinking.

The credits gave special thanks to Jake and Sissy and “The Town of Jake’s Corner”. I don’t know where there is a “Town” of Jake’s Corner.

The Edge Hotel 150 at Adirondack Speedway will be shown on Speed TV. Wednesday August 6th at 12 noon edt. TOMORROW.

The Montreal Rolex race was really really good! I have recorded at Mom and Dad's place if anyone wants to see it. It had a little of everything. The one thing this race series seems to always have is great racing. The cars may be dinosaurs compared to ALMS, but they always provide excitment. I have stated to Paul my disappointment in Max "the Ax"'s driving skill over the last couple of years. For all the hype (fancy nickname) He doesn't seem to deliver. Valiente is the better driver in that car right now.
The Howard-Childress #4 car is on the entry list for the Glen.
The Nationwide race at Montreal was a disaster. I was really looking forward to this race after last years. Nascar did not handle the situation well (again). I was glad to see Ron Fellows win though, the whole Canadian thing and all.
If Nascar was anticipating running in the rain (they had teams mount up rain tires to be ready). Why not have the cars start the race with the wipers, defroster and rear safety light already mounted. At least this way the teams would have been able to make sure they were put on well and worked. Instead of putting them on in a down pour during a "3 minute" pit stop (actual Nascar time 20 minutes). The could have come in put rain tires on and been back out in the usual 15-30 seconds.
I don't think they will try this on grand national/winston/nextel/sprint cup cars at the Glen if it rains. I think Nascar will stop the race and wait for the track to dry.
Did I mention the Montreal Rolex race was awesome!
